The museum was created and developed through a cooperation between Mali and the Netherlands, which since more than 50 years, is also expressed in some positive actions in specific areas, historically and architecturally, the most important of Mali. It is the inland delta of the Niger and the area of Dogon,areas which have 4 sites placed on Unesco's World Heritage.
The total assets in the Museum consists of 12,000 pieces. The exhibits include:
a) archaeological objects recovered from excavations or from the trafficking (the recoveries are unfortunately very few compared to the desaster done in ages ...) and that are characteristic of almost all parts of the country;
b) ethnographic objects referring to the many ethnicities and cultures of the country: masks, statues, objects of "material culture", textiles, musical instruments and poiteries.
The Museum wants also to be promoter of cultural expressions of Mali and, therefore, are organized various exhibitions of art but also concerts and fashion shows.
The Museum is also a very beautiful architectural point of view, becauseit is located a building inspired by the houses of clay from the region of Djenne.
Beside the museum, there is a real marvel of biodiversity in Mali: the Biological Park created in 1946 by Theodore Monod, but now is affected, unfortunately, by a certain state of disrepair due to lack of funds. We recommend you to go there, it's worth it and also contribute to its rebirth!
You can also stop in for a snack!
The Museum is open daily from 9 am to 18. It's closed on Monday.
