The museum, opened in '98, is the idea of Madame Adame Ba Konarè, with the intention of creating a more tangible form for the movement of emancipation of women in Mali.
Currently in the Museum there are several permanent exhibitions that refer to:
- The women's clothes of the 11 ethnic groups represented, but also the clothes used in traditional rites, such as marriages.
- There is also a collection of jewelry and fabrics.
- A collection of photos portraying women of the 19th century, with their different hair, clothes and parures
- A collection of masks and figurines,perhaps the most representative of the feminine world in its essential attributes or fertility and motherhood. There are sacred and religious objects, but also profane.
- Figurines and puppets, objects made mostly in clay and reflect the mores of traditional society, the rituals related to women such as fertility, excision, parties for women etc ...
- Ornaments, inventiveness and the collection of women's ability to create. From agate necklaces with amulets or necklaces of glass paste and seductive fragrances, each linked to one of the special moments of women.
Kitchen: it offers a foray into the magical universe of women through a selection of items and products that demonstrate the skills and culinary techniques of the different communities in the country.
The museum also has several rooms where are organized meetings, training activities and various events. There is also an important documentation center where are stocked books, audio-visual and music, all about female world.
Finally, there are some workshops of traditional crafts and a traditional pharmacy of plants useful to women and their problems or stages of life.
Beside the museum there is a boutique with all the typical products of Mali and a restaurant.
The Museum has recently undergone renovation, so some rooms may still be closed. It is advisable to call prior to arrival.
It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9 to 18.
