Altes Museum (which in German literally means "the Old Museum") in Berlin is one of the most interesting of the German capital and is located in the central area of the Museum Island, not far from Alexanderplatz. Among the Museums Island, the Altes Museum is certainly the most prestigious for its antiquity and the importance of the collections housed.
It was initially called Königliches Museum (Royal Museum), and was built according to the canons of neoclassical architecture between 1823 and 1828 by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It was built by the Hohenzollern family,in the early nineteenth century to house the rich collection of works of art in their possession, among which undoubtedly items of ancient Greek and Roman Empire, which represent the real attraction of the Museum.
The Altes Museum opened its doors in 1830 as the first public museum in Prussia. Damaged by fire during World War II, was restored from 1958 to 1966. Today it houses the oldest collection of all the State Museums in Berlin.
