La Colonne du Congrès et de la Constitution (Congress Column), designed by the architect Joseph Poelaert, was built between 1859 and 1859 to celebrate the Congress in 1830, which promulgated the Belgian Constitution. Inspired by Trajan's Column, the monument glorifies the independence of Belgium through many allegories in the style of the Romantic epoch: in fact there are allegorical statues representing the fundamental rights and the nine provinces of the country, as well as coats and etchings of dates, names and famous celebratory poems.

On top of the 25-meter column, a statue of the monarch of the time, the beloved King Leopold I.
