The Abbey of La Cambre was founded in 1201 by a Belgian noblewoman, who then entrust it to the Cistercian Order.
Extensively renovated and enlarged in the seventeenth century, now the Abbey, together with its spacious courtyard, housing buildings arranged along a semicircular plan, forms an example of a very harmonious architecture of that time, born from the desire of the Abbess to recreate the atmosphere of the castle's royal family. The community was in fact made up of 100 religious, many of which came from noble families.
From Avenue de Mot you can enjoy a beautiful view of the complex and the terraced gardens in the French style, designed in 1720 and restored in 1930. Locals say these are the places where you can enjoy the most quiet of the city, especially during summer evenings when the light effects are particularly fascinating.
