The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is undoubtedly a step for those who decide to come to visit the city, we can not go home without seeing it.
The building is located in the most famous square in Cairo, Midan (which means precisely square) Tahrir. On two floors the Egyptian Museum houses a collection of 120,000 pieces and hidden in the basement there are another 150,000! It 's why in 2011 is expected to move the museum to a more suitable location.
A guided tour of the museum (which I strongly recommend) takes about 1 ½ hours and costs € 20 more or less 120LE. You could also buy a map of the museum or a book with explanations of the rooms but you will be spending the same amount or more, and losing the pleasure of the explanation, however, is much more stressful!
On the ground floor of the Egyptian Museum are arranged exhibits chronologically disposed from the ancient Kingdom until Late Period, plus pieces from tombs and sarcophagi. On the first floor are the Galleries of Tutankhamen, the hall of the royal mummies and various objects that comprise the food found intact in their graves, then used wigs, toys and anything used in everyday life.
Obviously what I found most fascinating was the gallery of Tutankhamun. We can see his thrones of gold and semiprecious stones, his games, the beds where it has stayed the pharaoh's famous golden mask that we have all seen on school books, fans, sticks, its equipment to go into battle and even underwear.
The treasury is obviously very small and always crowded with tourists. It is not easy to pass in or out much less then it would be best to visit in the morning opening of the museum or to the lunch hour.
The museum could be very hot, bring a bottle of water is a good idea and please (I'm talking to girls!) Remember that you are in a Muslim country being foreign does not allow us to go around dressed as we please. We are still guests and our nakedness embarrasses both men and women.
