This Church is called the "Suspended" because it was built on the Water Gate of the ancient Roman fortress of Babylon. You enter through a door , along a corridor outside the wall is decorated with beautiful mosaics depicting scenes from the life of the holy family . From the door at the top you enter the courtyard of the church itself.

Looking at the Suspended Church is surprising, Mamluk style (which is reflected in the Coptic decoration) is really beautiful. The complex and involving the use of colored stone, marble, wood andmosaic involving three hundred and sixty degrees.

Essential characteristics of the Coptic churches are: a round wooden ceiling that resembles the shape of a ship and remember Noah and his ark, the Roman columns and under the altar ofmarble columns represent the 12 apostles of which 11 are whiteand one black to remember the betrayal of Judas.

The Suspended is a special highlight from orthodox Christianity here in Cairo not to be missed!
