The Diamond Palace is the most emblematic buildings of the city of Ferrara. It owes its name for the typical ashlar outer coating. 8500 blocks of white marble with their particular shape, cut at different angles, creating a special play of light and dark with the sun.
Palazzo dei Diamanti was built between 1492 and 1503 by Ercole I d'Este. The architect was Biagio Rossetti. The same man who in those years changed the face of Ferrara with the Erculean addition, the new urban plan desired by the prince.
With the addition the city would have abandoned the old criteria in favor of the medieval Renaissance.
Two new roads were built on the model of Roman orthogonal. In this revision of the city, the palace became one of the buildings located on the tip as "Crossroads of the Angels" (Quadrivio degli Angeli) , that is the point where the two newroads crossed.
The Diamond Palace houses the national art gallery with paintings of the Ferarrese school ranging from the Middle Ages until the eighteenth of the most famous paintings by artists such as Garofalo, Ercole de Roberti, Cosme Tura, etc. ..
A portion of the building is dedicated to important exhibitions devoted to modern and contemporary art. Among the past editions we find the likes of Monet, Rauschenberg,Joshua Reynolds, Corot, Turner, etc ...
